Dear brothers in Tannoy,

 

It is a very difficult situation for me today.

 

I must say sorry to you all. I excuse me from heart and soul. It a big blame

for me - but I only love the truth and facts. Yesterday I learned that I was

sitting on a mountain of lies for the last 20 years.

 

The story: In the times of being a guitar player I played in 1986 in a bigger

studio in Worms, the ***** studio. There the master engineer explained me

something about db. But I was not understandimg him. I only learned, that a

drumcit makes 120 db - and this was my reference to say that something is

loud like live or not.

In 1983 I heard the first time in my life from german magazines about db -

the Iron Maiden story with the 186 db - you know. (and the problems for

cameras and mic s to do the job)The Metal Hammer wrote in the beginning of

the 90 s that Manowar is the loudest band on earth playing around 200 db, so

I was believing.

 

Yesterday I readed all your letters and if Hans says - 186 db is not possible

- I must proof what I have said, because our Hans here is the law-man!

 

I phoned a lot of friends yesterday, the first step was to phone my old mate

Jörg ****** - the man who was making the P.A.-system for the Rolling Stones

on the last 3 worldtours!!!!

It s truth, really. It s a german man!

 

Jörg is a big research worker. He was laughing as I told him about the 186 db

from Iron Maiden and that nobody believes me in the Tannoy Club.

 

So, I say it short - we had a big phone friends a long mega phone and I was

only understanding some percents of what he was saying.

 

Here are the facts:

1) 186 db in Dortmund was an error or lie of the German magacines.

2) You can do 186 db in Dortmund Westfalenhalle - but not in 1983! And then

there would be no place for the fans, only for the loudspeakers. And its

theory-because of the power you need - never can do it with 85.000 watts they

had!

3) The Rolling stones are playing with a "Kennschalldruck"(wordforword in

english:knowlevelpressure) from only 138 db! 146 db is theory of

sumfrequencies.

4) Manowar and Iron Maiden are playing around 140-143 db -not more!

5) Military is constructing loudspeakers with 141 db efficiency by 1

watt/mtr. For killing people with 3,5 hertz (the living frequenzy of human

being - I have not the right words, this is a definition).

6) 186 db is really more than an atomic bomb, only one can do this - a

twister!

7) To bring 3 db more is to double.

8) The size of the room sets the maximum of db a frontier because of the

air.

 

I told Jörg about the 120 db of a drumcit and that I can t believe to get it

in a big P.A. like the Stones have can t only have 138 db! Jörg was laughing

again - 123 db would be the double of 120 db and 126 db the double of 123 and

so on, so that 138 db is blowing you complete away without good earplugs.

 

What a blame for me! What a shame for me! I was really believing the bulls...

about the 186 db and beginning of the 90s broke the 200 db from Manowar.

 

I called Karl Heinz ***** in germany, an engineer and the friend who had the

studio in the 8oies in Worms, he was coming with microphone and equipment

yesterday evening to say you the facts.

 

I will never believe without facts in the future - one such a shame is enough

for me, friends!

 

Karl Heinz, this old jazz fanatic, was screaming of pains as I drove my

Westminster with the Metallica Reload Album, one of the best in Metal history

........

But on my hearing place I was awaiting 120-125 db with a big smile on my

lips.

 

And now the facts: Only 95 db peak were coming to my hearing

place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And this was short before blowing away the door out of my room!!!!!!!!!!

 

I was complete ready with my nerves - sure Karl Heinz also said - boah louder

than hell-louder than live - but it wasn t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

I thought that his equipment must have a damage - so we tested some things

like projector-fan, where I have prospect datas. It was working correct!

 

95 db is loud - and I think I never heard such a loud drumcit live(without a

P.A.) like in my cellar!!!! I was playing 17 years with my band. And now I

think a drumcit never brings my old reference of 120 db - this must be

impossible.

 

So forget fast all the things I wrote about db s. Complete Bulls....

 

Sorry friends - but I was believing, what Metal Hammer, Iron Maiden fan mag s

and daily press were writing. I do not know where they get their datas from!

 

We tested the difference from 70 db to 95 db - what a big difference - 25 db

is like two worlds. So I understand why muting of amplifiers is only coming

20 db down!

 

The shame for me is one thing - the other thing is - I have to thank you all

very much - without you all I would believe such lies for the rest of my

life. I m learning here in the club - its my school!

 

And Hans - thank you for writing with so much love - and not with hate to me

headbanger .

 

So I must correct my tube testing of the shindo - they never can bring 100 db

with my Westminster, sorry. If it was much, it was around 90 db by doing a

good job.
